Erstmals 1788 erschienenes Hauptwerk von J. L. Lagrange, Begründer der analytischen Mechanik. Band 2 wurde posthum von Gaspard Prony editiert. "Joseph Louis Lagrange is best known for his classic in mechanics, which was of inestimable aid to astronomers. He was proud of the fact that it did not contain a single diagram or illustration, though perhaps a chapter decoration might be considered as such" (Sparrow).
