Erste Ausgabe. - Schönes großformatiges Werk zu römischen Triumphbogen, Reliefs und Münzen (darunter Konstantinbogen, Titusbogen und der Septimus-Severus-Bogen) etc. Der vierseitige Text von J. M. Suarez beschreibt den Bogen des Septimus Severus. Die großformatigen Tafeln wurden meist von Pietro Santo Bartoli (1635-1700) entworfen und gestochen. Das von Lucatellus entworfene Porträt zeigt den Kardinal Pietro Ottoboni in einem ovalen Rahmen umgeben von barocken allegor. Figuren und Putten. "This work is basically a conflation, by the publisher-editor, Giovanni Giacomo de' Rossi, of the plates relation to the bas-reliefs of triumphal arches in Rome in Bartolis Admiranda romanarum .. of plates copied from those contributed by Bartoli after drawings by Berretini da Cortona for Suares' work on the Arch of Severus; and of a small number of .. new plates engraved by an unnamed hand .. based on drawings in Guiliano da sangallo's sketch-book in the Barberini library" (British Arch. (meist im unt. R.), 3 Taf. mit Knickspur, 2 Tafeln mit kl. Wurmspuren, 1 Taf. mit kl. Randeinriß, Vorsätze und hint. Innendeckel gestempelt. Kanten und Rücken (bes. an den Kapitalen) mit ergänzten Fehlstellen im Bezug und kl. Ausbesserungen. Trotz der kl. beschriebenen Mängel insges. schönes Exemplar.

First edition of the nice large-size work on Roman triumphal archs, reliefs and coins. With 1 engr. portrait and 48 coppers on 46 plates (24 double-page). Contemp. mottled calf with gilt tooling. Folio. 6 ll. - Title and text ll. somewhat foxed, plates somewhat foxed in outer right margin, as well as slightly soiled (mostly in lower margin), 3 plates with creasemarks, 2 plates with small wormtraces, 1 plate with small marginal tear, endpapers and rear pastedown stamped. Edges and spine (especially to spine ends) with mended blemishes and small mended spots to covering. Despite the small blemishes an overall fine copy.
