Karl Schmidt-Rottluff
9 Holzschnitte.

"Religion was a favorite theme of the postwar artists .. The whole idea of high and outgoing Christianity came from Tolstoi, defined as service to mankind. Some of the Expressionists carried this idea into the late 1920s as a reaction against suffering and the psychosis of revolution. Religion seems to be a breakthrough for the young Schmidt-Rottluff. It was not so much a theme as a sketch of a possible world .. he tried to give the old symbols new meanings for a renewed mankind. So we find these illustrations are not true illustrations of church tradition but direct expressions" (Reed). - Druck auf Van Gelder-Zonen. - Darstellungsgröße ca. 50 : 39 cm.
